First one: the multiple-select, in the index card layout, is pushing outside its parent container when you select an input with a long amount of char.

a lot has been already polished (thx @Michael_v_H + @Steffen !)... here three of the proposals / observations that I´d still like to 'carry over' from the aforementioned thread: (edited)

(1) » I know, the fate of 3-day / week- / month-view is still in the open... ... but in principal it would be great (expected) that clicking on a day could / would link to 'normal' [singular] day timeline-view « (edited)
4:14 PM
(2) » .. but one thing (went) missing for me is some easy way to get a kind of dashboard overview over recent objects [across types!]. the dashboard is per se fantastic in Capacities – but again it looks like working in a very localist / splintered way for DBs / collections 'only' (I already commented elsewhere about the felt gap to access the totality / total set of objects in Capacities, and how that, IMO, highlights the DB-feeling at cost of organic / direct access to the databody). « [full remark here: https://discord.com/channels/940596022344843336/1067800509236379690/1070310032555655208 ] (edited)

(3) » • solve cut-off of titles in gallery view « – I think cutting off titles after line one, when lines are very short anyways (because of the logic of tiles; ... and even more so, in case a cover image is sharing space with titles!) is not helpful. After all, the title is the one anchor to determine the relevance / assumed content of an object when visuall broswing the gallery...

We could make the title span two lines. 🤔

It's also maybe worth it to re-evaluate the gallery vs. wall view in taking this decision, if you make it two lines, it basically becomes the wall view haha. The only thing that will be different is the same flex height for gallery view. Personally, I only use the gallery view because, as a user, I use the tile Title as anchor to determine the relevance and because all titles are at the same height for the gallery view you can quickly scan from left to right and down in a F-pattern
2:13 AM
I would maybe go as far as stripping the content out of the view since the font-size is so small and I have never found myself using it for extra context. For me, the type + title + tags are always enough to determine which card I want to open.
2:13 AM
but that's a tricky decision as I don't know how other people are using it

I see the point. ... but currently the differentiator is factually a depracation 🙃 I do not know any other app with such shortened / clipped title views in a card view; and card and wall views are regularly very 'similar' in other contexts / apps too. it's the nature of this (little) difference. though, I have to say, the regular and sorted grid impression makes a really big-big difference to me (to the point that I almost never use wall view, up to now) but I think the thought of differentiating them beyond the deprecated satus of titles is an interesting / good one! and like you, my hunch says, using less body content and maybe more 'structural' content (description; tags; number of blocks etc) might be an interesting route... ... but as you say, it's a design decision to be taken. 👀 I'd just line to see the title in a relevant / readable / browsable length 😀 (edited)

ps: one thing I regularly find and appreciate in other apps is a way to dynamically change size of tiles to liking / viewing context via slider....

Totally agree, but not always possible to endlessly finetune a certain feature especially when you have users that are using it differently as you have envisioned 🙂 Its all a game of trade-offs ..
3:12 AM
In my previous job as Product Owner for a platform in healthcare we had 50+ clients and every client had a deploy file where we would activate different settings, logic and translations. It was a living hell as PO 😂 Orgs basically creating contradicting workflows inside certain modules which meant changing a certain feature would break some workflows ... which in the end meant nobody was satisfied because we had to choose a middle ground to make it work for everyone ..
3:18 AM
Small UX bug: selecting and then trying to scroll a certain block up a page does not work. I expect that the page scrolls up or down if i move the block to the border/top of the browser window

I see the overall point in case of Capacities development! ... but also feel like 'readable titles' is not 'finetuning a certain [marginal] feature' 😉 the scope of my argument for 'first bring the house in order' was deliberately 'basic structures and intended / pre-architectured uses' 🙂

small UI thing: pasting a link in the 'text' input type property is creating a weird white space (enter) above the link, you cant remove it be hitting backspace 🤔
Avatar
@Michael_v_H / @Steffen – as to views (gallery, or wall, ... or generally): could the 'description' be part of the view display / excerpt?! I don´t know about the thoughts behind this, or the ways others are using different fields... but for me, the description is the the most important / salient text field, containing the central information (as 'description' suggests). (... this could also be a diffentiator btw card and wall, as @boonikad9300 suggested; in which case I think the card would be the prefered place for it)

on 'description': I appreciate that description has been made a first class citizen by inserting it as standard to the beginning of an object page! ... then, I feel, it still has to be worked at in terms of its overall place and consistency, and efficient use in the Capacities universe. • example 1: currently, while prominent on page (for good reasons) it doesn´t appear in the 'list views' at all (but here in exception with table view, where it appears as prominent standard column) • example 2: with the current behavior of the objects sidebar there is a) a double display (= waste of screen/UX estate) of description (as heading section of page and as heading section of sidebar); and b) no way around that (as sidebar description can´t be altered / toggled I think these things point to some underlying confusion / inconsistencies, a.k.a. questions. while I am pointing here to some practical quirks, I´d think the underlying question really is: *what is / should be the real function of 'descriptions' in Capacities *– taken as a PKM! the 'answers' to the points raised above probably flow from that. I feel this is actually a semi-important issue, as it finally points to questions of knowledge / cognitive architecture, rather than 'just' the question of technical fields and functions... and after all it´s the architecture that makes Capacities shine... 😃
Avatar
studying design for some time, overall key take is you should make it easy to know were to look / identify what's important when you have all elements same size, same color, same gap size between them, you can't visually identify necessary information there's also smth like visual weight, which determiners where your eye will go first, and so you shouldn't have most element's with same weight, brain would be required to think more, which again, leads to discomfort but yea, that's like key thing to keep in mind & one of the reasons why for example Obsidian feels complicated, most buttons look same, but you can't tell which are important smth like "Big, Medium, Small" principle might be helpful in this case (edited)

The interface or the appearance of capacities can still be polished in some places. In the picture the block menu is hardly distinguishable from the background. On a page, the border between self-generated and automatically generated content (backlinks, timeline, etc) is hardly recognizable. When scrolling on extensive pages, it is easy to lose orientation. In both cases, a discreet color marking could facilitate orientation. Speaking of colors: The red "TODAY" does not feel comfortable to me. Red is an alarm color, a warning. A warmer, cozier tone would be a better choice. But maybe that's just my personal feeling. "TODAY" is the most frequently used page for me. A better colored marking of the button on the top left would make it even easier to access quickly. Overall, the look of the app is not very appealing to me. A little color here and subtle highlighting there could make it easier to use. Comfort and an appealing design are essential for a tool that is used on a daily basis. But it is probably not so easy to meet the taste of a large number of users. The first priority should still be the functional development. This is on a very good way and I am convinced that also the polishing of the working environment will gradually achieve a respectable result.

Ideally, there will be a theme section in your settings panel where you, as a user, can override the default 'Capacities' theme with variables like:
  • Color: {Primary, Background, Foreground, Outlines, Primary, Positive, Negative}
  • Font: {serif, sans serif, mono}
But I think there is already a ticket on that -> https://capacities.canny.io/feedback/p/css-themes

... maybe it´s just me... but I am always duped in collections, when writing a title, that there is the random chance to create a paragraph / separate second line... – is this intended? maybe I am not seeing the use case here, but I´d get rid of it as it seems error-prone and unneccessary. just my (first) impression... 🙂 (edited)

property editor: I can´t really get my head around when a change in the property editor needs a confirmation click, and when it is automatically applied when closing the pane, or returning to the general type list... it feels a little inconsistent here. and also often leads to changes not applied when expected (at least in my case 😌 ). no biggie, but maybe a naggie... 🙃
1:49 AM
... as we are at minute details... and diving deep(er) into property editor: • would be nice if date fields allow setting visibility directly in properties editor sheet / can be set to 'hide' here. currently it seems one has to go via second edit in the database view itself • would be nice if 'date' input would also offer 'created at', 'last edited at'

Hopefully an easy win, my muscle memory is very much attuned to using CMD+W to close tabs. This closes the whole Capacities app so I’ve hard to resort to using Keyboard Maestro to remap the shortcut to escape when using capacities. Kinda works but it would be nice for it to work as it usually does across most other apps.

Is it just me or are other also confused by the carets in e.g., "Backlinks" pointing in the wrong direction? I'm used to seeing a caret pointing down i.e., "v" when there is something to uncover and a caret pointing up i.e, "^" when there is something to hide. But in Capacities, it's the opposite. First two images: notion hiding text and then showing hidden text. Second two images: Capacities showing text and then hiding text. (edited)

But aren’t there common UI/UX practices or guidelines on how to face these indicators? Not to pick a quarrel, but I can’t think of any app that does it (in my eyes wrong) like Capacities. Even the Wikipedia page on Disclosure Widgets writes “or a button with an arrow pointing downward when it is collapsed and upward when it is expanded (corresponding to how the widget will change state if the button is clicked)”

And MS talks about it in their guidelines https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/uxguide/ctrl-progressive-disclosure-controls where a downward facing caret indicates “something can be revealed”
With a progressive disclosure control, users can show or hide additional information including data, options, or commands.

Better actually to read the section https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/uxguide/ctrl-progressive-disclosure-controls?redirectedfrom=MSDN#progressive-disclosure-controls-1 as it take about what the glyph indicates being in most cases the future state. Only for the rotating triangle (the one @boonikad9300 talked about) does it indicate the present state
With a progressive disclosure control, users can show or hide additional information including data, options, or commands.

... like take Craft: the behavior there is: cmd + a leads first to selection of current block; pressed another time it selects the whole document. this helpful logic could be transferred: 1x cmd + a = block selection; 2x = body (w/o properties + title); 3x = whole object content...

there is a thing going on with 'Description'. – The description field appears even if 'Description' is not a selected property. This leads to a strange behavior: with no 'Description' property selected one can still add a description in the sidebar field for that property. While it is taken (and indicated as present), it will only be displayed as a single line... but not be saved... – I think this can use some clarification / disambiguation 🤔 😀

Another UX improvement for the MacOS app shortcuts, when I hit “cmd + W” it shouldn’t Quit Capacities. The shortcut should close the current open tab.

sorry all kinds of feedback from me today- Creating a Fixed Set selection is weird how there is "Select & Add to Set" is the only option. I'm not sure the solution here but it needs to be something like "Click to Select" and "Control + Click to add to set only" but NOT also select it. I find myself having to select & add everything then unselect everything I don't want selected but remain in the fixed set for that property. What's weird to me most is that when creating the property, I can't create the set there in the property settings which is what I expect (edited)

hey, I love the look of the 'new' Capacities. it´s even better, slicker. also seems more repsonsive now. probably because of the good design 😀 – there is much good stuff. in particular I like: sidebars systematization, search in pickers... of course whatever lays the ground for themes is good!! 😄 ... one idea for improvement (as I am one of the people where the 'New Type' icon drowns under the line of sight – because I fancy types; and have some of them in the list...): wouldn´t it make sense to put that '+' down on the fixed panel (bottom left), for pragmatics ... as well as maybe for logical consistency? in the end, I´d appreciate any easy access option for people with longer type lists, in any way or form 🙏 (edited)

Hi Lerone. I’m really happy with all the great work done in this release. There are a lot of improvements. I support your idea about the New Type option. I have many types with collections inside and I require to have visible the collections so the New type option is out of my sight and reach. I think it could be on the right side of the bottom of the left sidebar.

hey, I already stated there is so much to like about the UI overhaul... now, in use come the nitty-gritty questions / observations. One relates to the sidebar – especially with a view to pinned objects. So, in this dimension I think things are still undecided to unorderly/messy (again IMO): 1) one cannot pin an object from object view to the sidebar; making collecting stuff a click affair (detour via list view is neccessary). While this is a real minor detail that can be easily resolved, it signals to me that the workflow with the sidebar is just not really on the map... or at least on the forefront of the map 😉 2) when opening the sidebar of an object the pin sidebar now vanishes. hm. I see the thinking here, and also very much welcome the cleaning up of everything, esp. sidebar. ... but actually this makes practical use of the pin sidebar even more opaque... at least to me. So, I raised this before. And there was not a lot of echo. I assign that to the fact that development still looks very much at functions and features. Which is understandable. And neccessary. But I´d wish the conversation about some processual workflows in and around Capacities would deepen, and take a likewise position in development. This is not to complain. Everything is getting (much) better in here. But I see a little drift to functions and features... and would encourage some additional focus on workflows and the 'architectural' development. Just sayin' ...

I think in this line of thinking, a VD on the Sidebar and Pinning (standing in for the whole process of – temporary – collation and collection in the 'visual present') would make sense... ... and potentially also clarify – to everyone – where to go with and how to best make use of the 'pin-bar' Love to the team! In general, It is very difficult for most people to think about processes/systems design/bigger picture thinking (I think that's why it stayed silent on that bit maybe?). What you are saying is also a bit of a double-edged sword imho: you need features to form your personal workflows, and workflows to inform which features you need 🙂 For example, I didn't see the need for a pinned feature when I started using Capacities. However, when my personal workflow and knowledge capture system developed further and I began adding more information to my system, I found they are very handy as an 'entry-point' and routes to the deeper lying, linked content! 🙂 Overall, I think you hit a very good point when talking about processual workflows and architecture: In an ideal world each feature would be useful on its own but can also serve as a building block or part of a larger (knowledge) workflow. 🤔
Avatar
agree, @boonikad9300 , about the 'double-edged sword'; or more constructively, I also think given features and processes inform each other. basically this is what makes any given tool and the specific 'propositions' (feature-style/-architecture) productive to each and everyone of us. – that is also, why this should be reflected and developed in tandem, imho. as to your experience w/ 'pinning', that is of course interesting; and I am sure such experiences – and feedbacking them / reflecting them collectively – would be beneficial to everyone. ... then, just to be sure: you are also talking about the kind of 'pin-stacking', which leads to the very temporary collections in the right hand sidebar (not the more permanently 'pinning' in the left sidebar? – ... because my starting point (see initial post) wasn't purely abstract reasoning here; but triggered by the – in my view not yet clear / transparent / obvious – behavior and 'affordance' of the 'open in sidebar' / then 'pin to sidebar' function ... which, as you see here, even in nomenclatura 'pinning to sidebar' is a little confusing, as there is one option to pin to left sidebar (akin to 'bookmarking'); and in the other case (right sidebar) works rather temporary and in a visual logic (actually a semblance of 'stacked tabs' or something likewise). I gather, personally, what can be seen in this undetected ambivalency of 'pinning', is the following: good intuition about useful functions (as already exist in other apps); without a yet fleshed out idea what it really means (in terms of possible workflows / affordances etc) in Capacities... which, to me, is the whole point behind the rather inconsistent way the right sidebar currently works, or 'affords itself' ...

I think with a little tweak in the default behaviour it could be a lot more clear / powerful: Currently, it replaces the side-panel page if you shift-clicking a link 2 times, however, I you change that behaviour to stacking by default it would be a LOT more clear for me 🙂

... currently part of the new 'problem' (afaik), is that where this 'stack' remained visible consistently as long as you didn´t close the right sidebar, this has now changed to a behavior where the 'stack' disappears once you open the 'new' (second?) right sidebar from within any given 'main object' (the one focussed in the middle pane)... yeah, it should be! I think so, too... but while this was never really totally clear (or: awaited further development), this is currently defeated by the move to the new behavior just described above (and actually subject of my 'original' post / question / remark on the 'new' right sidebar(s) behavior(s))... again, all this can take several routes. but also, again, it should be part of some systematic, explicit, and (best) collective reflection and shaping... imho... Thanks for your kind words 🙂 1. Cmd + H should work with the newest update. Daily note shortcut is now cmd + ctrl + H. 2. You can cmd + click on every object to open it in a new tab. Same works for the create menu. Cmd + U then search for your type and then hit Cmd + Enter and it will open in a new tab. Does that make sense?

Also, I am loving everything in the new update with the polished UI, but could we have a + button beside the Objects dropdown (or maybe a shortcut)? With more and more objects it gets inconvenient to scroll all the way down and click on new type

or just bringing the traffic lights down a bit to be aligned with the icons. A side effect would be that the whole sidebar would have to be shifted down to account for that when it's opened.

Yes, the issue was that we also have to handle the case with the tabs bar open. So it will look cut off in at least one way. But maybe it's better to do it as you suggest so it looks at least well in the main view.

Does anyone else struggle to quickly know if an open tab/page is for the calendar entry page or daily note for that day? I’m curious to know why the calendar entry page and daily note page are distinct?

hey, I had the same issue earlier; and raised it here in this very channel: https://discord.com/channels/940596022344843336/1074297264991911967/1101488635913707590 – it was taken up by Michael & Steffen and certainly addressed at some point. but after the recent updates I am also again struggling with a lack of very clear discernability as to this...

... currently part of the new 'problem' (afaik), is that where this 'stack' remained visible consistently as long as you didn´t close the right sidebar, this has now changed to a behavior where the 'stack' disappears once you open the 'new' (second?) right sidebar from within any given 'main object' (the one focussed in the middle pane)... thanks for the additional hint, @boonikad9300 👍 – actually some of the smaller things I mentioned have been taken up; and wouldn´t have realized w/o your poke! – this is good. then, the whole question of the right-hand side-(stack-)bar is still deserving some collective weighing and – if kept as a sub-module – some development, IMO. I think – like you (I gather) – it has great potential. and I am assuming, Michael and Steffen, who put it there to begin with, also still believe in it. and I guess, everyone feels it is not yet in its full standing, or at least – taken feedback here (including yours, again) – people are not yet really aware of it, or how to use it within the Capacity-'portfolio'. (that is my assumption here, from circumstantial evidence. then, we all know about the mass of development tasks, neccessary or simply expeceted. ... so, surely it will be nice keeping some collective attention on this, and poke each other, whenever there is something to poke about... 🙃 . ... in any way, having the right bar back as more consistent / persistent UI-element is definitely a good thing!!

Is it necessary to always show the (add property) button above each object? It's an action that isn't very frequent (editing object settings), and removing it would cleanup & declutter to focus more on the actual content editing of each object. Isn't having this in the object settings good enough(?) or only show it on hover somewhere?

I personally like this capability within the document, but think it could easily be added to the new “…” menu to reduce friction.

hey Edo, it´s an ongoing discussion, which has been raised here in the forum (e.g. https://discord.com/channels/940596022344843336/1001364765051994132/1082417400751857774), and also made me register it at Canny (https://capacities.io/feedback/p/inconsistent-search-results). @Steffen already reacted to it, affirming to adress the concern (the very same thing you are raising now again). so, I guess it´s tricky. but for sure – as search is one of the basic access routes to one´s content – search fixing / optimizing should be a priority. btw: I was just about reporting another ongoing 'glitch' / inconsistency in the results here on my end. in my case a search string brings up a 'nearby'-tag ('xberg'), but not the tag actually containing the string ('pberg')... ... so, I hope all this can improved, as search is of basic / fundamental importance.

was unsure where to put it; as I decided it´s best put on Canny as FR, but it also has reasons to 'live' here, this is the clone: I think the left sidebar got better for sure. two ways in which I think it could get better still: 1) extend folding to object list internal organization I like the option to fold w/in left sidebar. but as long as it only carries pinned items + object list, this is of restricted surplus. one big surplus I´d see if this folding headers logic could be extended to create collections of 'object types' – and then allow folding them according to use 2) pinned objects should always stay visible IMO – as they are 'pinned' for a reason 🙂 – if one wants them 'out of view / the way', one can... fold them 😉 – see here: https://capacities.io/feedback/p/left-sidebar-improvements – ... ... oh, and did we already talk about the right sidebar...?! 😇

Right side-bar (stack bar) experiences: OK. as said, Capacities rules. it has become – and will stay – my center stage for knowledge 'management', cultivation, organization, iteration, ... maybe 'ideation'. that said, I find the right sidebar more and more important in my use. and still find it a neglected gem / promise of Capacities UI/UX-architecture. but I do not need to repeat that again (see other contributions here). instead, I thought it might be helpful to start to journal where I need it, where it is helpful, or where it practically falls short still (needs improvement) in current implementation. I will start with a small, but very practical experience. but this should be continued in this thread over time (given my regular (– want on –) use 😄 – of course, I invite others to join in here. I think developing this will really broaden – not only deepen / intensify – the possible workprocesses / scenarios with Capacities. ... so, what I just experienced: I open an object there in the stack bar, containing an embedded collection / tag / .... I want to use this as kind of MOC / index list. then I open one of the contained objects as page – to look inside. effect: the new page view actually closes the right side-/stackbar, effectively 'dumping' my pinned view (against my intention, and against any practicality for this rather standard scenario). – what would be nice instead: if I could use / keep the right sidebar as a visible, 'breathing' space to anchor my session / work / little project of enquiry. this would a) help me thinking; b) be more practical and not force me to re-create this pinning effect endless times; c) make me feel less lost in a stream of opening / closing histories, but 'achor' the whole process / experience. ... ... that was example #01 🙃

I would suggest to make the nested groups more visible. My approche is to add box shadows to the groups, so each part its more distinguishable from each other. And its looks incredible cool if you style them with different colors.

this might be too subjective on personal preference, I don't really like the box shadow at least not this prominent and not for all implementations if there are columns sure, but if it's all just straight nested I think I'd prefer it to look like an outline without any shadow

yeah,I can understand that it's not to everyone's taste - andmaybe it doesnt't fit in the overhaul look (I use a customized theme) - but a visual indication of nested groups, if they're not colored, would be nice at least.

Am I missing how to select multiple records in an object and then create a new collection from that multi-select, or does this feature not yet exist? The functionality that I'm expecting from any app that has a database, is to do a search within that database (filter button is fine), and then select all records that match that filter criteria and create a new collection from that search result.

Smart Queries will be like what I want, but always recalculating (dynamically add/remove records into a collection as record values change), but there should at least be a way to manually select > 1 record and add it to a collection, right?

Michael_v_H 5/24/2023 7:14 AM
Yes, that's because Android is heavily relying an a "composing" mode where the actual text is only entered/submitted when a word finishes or the user intention is clear. But I think I just got an idea how I can make sure that the visual overlap with the placeholder does not occur. Thanks for pointing it out! 🙂

I mean its monospace which is still a common 'coding' font.

That said that's because this css section doesn't match .font-mono

@Steffen and @Michael_v_H. I enjoy each new version that you release, they are full of great improvements! Thanks a lot for your great work. I had seen that hiding some options (for example: Add cover image, wide layout, more info about the object --three points next to the type--) improves the visual but it doesn't help to the User Experience. We don't know that some options exists until someone mention it in Discord or we find it by luck. Could this options to stay always visible?

I think as more people use it, it won't really be an issue. I do agree it should be part of the onboarding and maybe we have a loading screen or notification for random tips when we log in.

I'm wondering if others agree, when you change a block to a toggle, it maintains the toggle "style" when you break to a new line (block) but I actually find myself preferring that it would not do this and to make another toggle I need to convert that new block to one. I can see why some might prefer the way it is I guess i'm in the other camp who wishes it didn't continue with toggles when I don't nest something under it but it's till a toggle

Yeah I wonder if they could just make it into an option in the settings. For example the color of the letters/background in a block doesn’t seem to continue if you press enter and go to the next block, people could also have different preferences for that kind of stuff. I wonder if it’s hard for them to just create a preference setting for those things.
10:43 AM
One thing I noticed about Notion is that it has almost no preference settings AT ALL and obsidian has way too many. I hope Capacities can be in the middle. For example, please please let me choose the overall UI size for the font, because on the MacBook and on the iPhone the characters are way too small I don’t like straining my eyes for no reason, but I don’t think people should HAVE to use bigger letters either, just let them choose. Right now I’m able to “zoom in” on Mac (it only makes the letters bigger thank god) but with the iPhone text size changer the mobile app doesn’t let the letters be changed ( I think it’s called dynamic type or something). Anyways wonder if people care about this at all 🤣

I would like that if I use a background colour for the first line of a toggle, that the nested content not also necessarily have the background colour as well. Or at least a way to select and remove the background from the nested blocks if I want.
Avatar
When marking a block as a toggle, I've noticed that toggles containing indented "children" blocks are shaded a darker color than the toggle of an "empty" block. However, the difference in shading is rather slight and to my eyes does not offer enough differentiation to make the distinction clear. Would it be possible to have to the two types of toggles (i.e. with children and w/o children) be more visually distinct/obvious? For example, something like this: ▷ (for toggles w/o children) and ▶︎ (for toggles w. children). (edited)

Maybe, all items with children by default may have a toggle, and without - no? That will be a clear distinction, like in Obsidian, for example. And there is already a ticket for it, and I know that I suggested it a bunch of times already 😄 https://capacities.io/feedback/p/outliner-mode (edited)

When we have tags within toggles, would it be possible to just show the block with the tag rather than the entire toggle and have the option to see more context (which would then show the entire toggle it is within)? Like for me, my Quotes object shows the entire toggle, which can take away from the quote and make it a bit more confusing to find. Thanks!

Just a small point, but if I’ve got an indented bullet list, at the end it’s normal practice for a return on an empty line should remove the bullet (which is does in capacities) and another return removes the indent. It makes going from one bulleted/indented section to another much quicker. (Yes, I appreciate I can press Shift and Tab to outdent, but it’s much slower than just hitting return a couple of times.) this might belong here; it might also belong to the more overaching, forwardlooking, conceptual part of 'general', or 'features and ideas'. I put it here: I am a big fan of the return of the right side-/stackbar (as some are probably aware). in particular I have to say I very much like and applaud the decision to give its tab-'session' it own, persistant 'right-bar'... ... but then, there is also this other persona, use-scenario-me that wants / needs something else – something tying this up somewhere between friction and architecture for higher-level cognitive operationability: what I am talking about: having opened several tabs, giving nice overview (on top of the brilliant overviews the main pane and its objects can harbor), possibly now even pinning them as tabs (another great, small, big improvement!), I regularly find myself wanting to collect what I find on the way, for a kind of collected / situationally curated overview, to get to higher levels of work and synthesizing on top of that. in this context, I am hindered by the current UI/UX in several ways: 1) I cant easily collect and put what I find in the tab view (nor the tabs themselves) to the right stackbar – in part because things would end up in their 'own' right stackbar; in part it seems because this is not planned for anyways; 2) plus: if I could / would do so, this would actually be defeated by a logic of assorted pairs of tabs / objects and 'their' respective right sidebar... ... so there is no way to collect / stack things I find via the briliiant oversight capabilities of Capacities across objects / tabs, and within a logic of sessions ... which might be the crucial point here, resp. the real idea I want to formulate... in any way: I wonder what others think; and again – of course – I wonder whether this can be somehow placed in the strategical thinking / planning of @Michael_v_H + @Steffen... hoping so... 😀 🦉 🦄

ps: one 'way' to achieve such a session-oriented collection would of course be pinning itself – the problem(s): 1) pinning to the workspace loses the instant visibility that I would want / strive for; 2) pinning to tabs in a way loses that too (as I can only sequentially browse the tabs), more importantly it occupies my central view / workspace in the middle, while the collections should be something like a sidenote / additional / augmented view.... so, there is some way of achieving something similar; but it really is a 'hack' and not optimal for certain workflows... that really rely on the '-flow'-part...
9:03 AM
pps: relating it to the brilliant idea of a meta-layer in Capacities (for annotations, highlights, comments ... i.e. secondary information), which @Michael_v_H today gave us a glimpse of (https://discord.com/channels/940596022344843336/969304624848855050/1124276465345757215), I think what I am having in mind / debating here (and before) is a secondary / split / alongside layer that can work accross a 'cognitive sessions' .... actually in a way 'only' extending a little, what the right sidebar already stands for... but fails to deliver because of its internal limitation (so far)...
Discord is the easiest way to communicate over voice, video, and text. Chat, hang out, and stay close with your friends and communities.

very small proposal: I find myself increasingly liking the preview pane opening of items (in some contexts). but I also dislike the subjectively felt cumbersome way of finally opening it in the second step as page view... ... technically it is clear, and one needs to 'only' click in top right corner for this. given the whole (relatively) complex layout it feels like a little surgeon operation, which it shouldn´t – my proposal / first idea: include a click in the title as an opening gesture. ... or something,... 🤔 😀

Nice, agree that the UX can be a bit improved on that one, but I wouldn't make it to implicit like that: users expect a visual cue + recognisable pattern. My proposal would be to maybe choose a more fitting icon in context of the preview panel (expand icon..?) and introduce a shortcut (like cmd+o) standing for "open as page" ❓

@lerone I think I get your situation and the associated problem. Wilk be thinking about a solution. New potential solutions will arise with bulk operations (and thus bulk selections of objects including in data views). I think that either tags or pages created from a selection (and continually filled with new items) could serve this purpose well if the interactions around them are smooth. I would be hesitant to introduce a new concept such as an additional stack etc.. (edited)

two low-tech high-friction bottlenecks that are haunting me in everyday use 🐇: 1) copy links (from inline links!) – it's a hit and miss; sometimes there is also a '↗︎' after auto-created links... and then interaction w/ the whole string seems to get even more complicated/ erratic... overall: I 'd be happy if there is a context menu 'copy link' (& a shortcut) for each & every of the link-cases 2) the command bar doesn't allow arrow navigation of cursor (left-/right movement). this is not only counterintuitive but also really stands in the way of fluid ad-hoc search operations (& others) 🦥 [edit / add-on: this also goes for tag-name input fields] overall, I think, two little quirks which would carry huge payoff in usability, once routed...! 🌱 (edited)

yes... at least often enough, so I do not notice a difference. 'funny' thing is w/ tags it sometimes work (like tags below images), but the 'normal' top tags did'nt work (last time)

Any possibility of eventually adding a "vim mode" option for those of us who love using it wherever possible? I'm an Obsidian user (as well as many other tools in the past) and not having that functionality adds friction to my experience. I am really enjoying Capacities' features though....the "object" approach just feels intuitive....it matches the way my mind works!

Sorry, lol! Oversimplifying things somewhat, "Vim" is a widely available text editor which enables users to create/edit/update any kind of text extremely efficiently using various keyboard shortcuts instead of their mouse. When an application allows users to turn on "Vim-mode", that means they can use the standard "vim" keyboard shortcuts that they are used to in order to quickly accomplish whatever they are trying to do. As an example, if Capacities had a "vim mode", then instead of taking their hand away from the keyboard and using their mouse to select a block and then drag it to another location and then returning their hand to the keyboard, a user could just use their standard "vim" keyboard shortcuts to cut the block and then put it somewhere else without ever using their mouse. It's a bit of a challenge to explain, but if someone has ever gotten used to "vim mode" then going back to using a regular text editor interface and a mouse feels EXTREMELY awkward and slow!

if the cursor is in a block you can already use Control + A to select the entire block then I think Alt + Up/Down to move the block. Not sure it's your "vim mode" but you can do this already in the context of moving a block with keyboard only. And testing now you don't even need the first part, just go straight to Alt + Up/Down inside a block (edited)

I don´t know how others deal with this... 🤔 but having a two word title cut off after the first word really in some cases renders the gallery view – which remains my preferred / default view – nearly useless. 💔 ... this is a little bit frustrating, as it seems really basic, to display titles of items in a usable / readable form...😣 ... I am really surprised nobody else seems to be really bothered... what is your magic solution? 🪄 or do people simply not use the gallery view? 🖼

Should be a pretty easy visual fix I imagine?
  • Make title smaller and / or don't truncate after 1 line but let it fill up 'at least' 2 lines. Agree with you that it defeats the purpose if you can't differentiate between multiple cards (forms follows function or function follows form... 🤔)
  • Also I find the peek through inside the content of the object pretty messy.. It's almost too small to read and makes the total overview in my opinion very cluttered (maybe that's why i'm always using the table view hehe .... ) A first fix could be to show only the most import data, reasoned from a hierarchy / cues:
  • Image
  • Title
  • Description
  • Top Level Tags (and later customisable options for showing properties on a card...)

of course, it does! nice! thx for quick visualization! it combines 2 points I was making here: 1) allow at leas two lines in heading (or alternstives that allow for display beyond 1 longer term...) 2) include description in overview displays; I am all for that – and to me it kind of feels natural / comsequential... but I admit a lot depends on what one's initial determination of ststus of 'desription' is. – for me it would be the basic synopsis of any item; which would make it a natural candidate for such display... but of course, I can't tell what @Steffen & @Michael_v_H see as the functional core of 'description'-field...

The teal and cyan colours in light mode seem to be mixed up, as the screenshots show the same blocks in the same colours, and they're in the rainbow order that the Edit Style menu specifies, but the colours seem mixed up in the light mode screenshot

Had an idea on object properties: see image 1. When you have objects with lots of properties, some always visible, others not, etc. It would be great to implement a shortcut or dropdown in this list to quickly change them in an "all up" view. There's already the iconography to re-use as well in image 2, just recycle these as a 3 state button as you click it cycles through or each item has a dropdown to shortcut to this setting 🙏

@boonikad9300 / @Steffen - Exactly! Lol. The “lighter” shade on the top is what it looks like for an object and the “darker” shade on the bottom is the daily note color. I often find myself thinking that an entering text in the object but in reality it’s in the daily note.

I haven't added images to a lot of my objects yet, and without them, I find it hard to distinguish between cards in the Gallery and especially in the Wall. It seems to me as though the visual hierarchy isn't hitting the right balance. One of the reasons for this is that the card titles seem too small relative to the other elements. In particular, the card titles are smaller than an H1 if the page content is visible in the card (see example). For me, the colorful tag blocks appear at the top of the visual hierarchy. My eye is definitely drawn to them before the title. If we had granular controls over what was visible in that view, I'd probably turn off tags. The card title might even be the fourth thing I see, after tags, h1, and object type. And that's amplified on a wall of similar cards, making it even more difficult to scan the titles.

@matt this channel originated from the idea to point out and collect small things around UI, like observational or good-to-have, easy-to-improve things around friction, inconsistency, small optimization etc. like @Desiderata says: whenever you feel it's more than just that, you want to put it on the table w/ more emphasis, having a bigger stake / need relating to it, or want to manifest it for community voting, Canny is the route to take. my experience: even w/o direct reaction here, Michael & Steffen implement a lot of these 'little things' over time; and I feel it helps to have a low-threshold, low-expectation collection mechanism for that... 🐹🐜🪶🌱 (edited)

I have a requirement, which may not be described very professionally. That is, when I select multiple block texts, I hope to support mouse scrolling, and I also hope to add a "resistance" feeling. The so-called "resistance" means that the mouse needs to move to a certain threshold to select the block of that line, just like Craft.

Currently, selecting multiple lines of blocks in Capacities is too smooth, lacking the indispensable "stuttering" feeling. This is not a good user experience because the feedback to the user is not obvious.😄 🤓

that's maybe good in your individual case then! 😅 I was talking about the people that – are in the non-English language channels here, as example (assuming they would benefit from adapted UI languages) – the people that would benefit from an autopopulated (editable) plural labels (in english ...as possibly in other languages, ...) I was also trying to see how to make some good sense of the OPs wish for everyones benefit so, I guess, my idea was to think about the whole lot, rather than just me and my use (though I would definitely also welcome auto-populated (english) plural labels... 😀 .... actually, with @Sri rather constructive and explanatory thinking, all someone in your case would have to do is overwrite a prepopulated field with whatever he / she deems correct; an act that people in your special position would have to do anyways(!) given Capacities set-up 🙂 so I wouldn't actually see what – really changes for people like you, while some others get an improvement?! 😂 🦦 (edited)

As long as when clicking the auto populated value, the whole content is selected so I can imediately delete it, it's no problem. However, some tools are just putting a cursor into the selected property, which means I at least have to CTRL+A and delete, instead of writing at once. But enough my ranting, no one should care abut it anyway.

And, for full transparency, maybe add a section where you see the total cost before updating your plan (or flip in the component the cost from /mo to /year when setting the billed yearly toggle to true?) 💡

Hey... Does anyone else got a huge problem with the new implementation of the Wall View? I was away for a week and since I've been back, the Wall View has changed. It is now almost indistinguishable from the Gallery View of my objects. I extensively used the Property Type Blocks for my objects. This allowed me to see the beginning of each block in Wall View, so I could quickly compare all the relevant datasets in my objects. Now, I only see the cover image in Wall View. This destroys my whole setup. For me, the Wall View was unique to organizing and viewing data sets in objects, and it was very powerful when combined with multiple datatype blocks. I understand the decision to remove blocks from the Gallery View, but please reintroduce data blocks in the Wall View. I know not many people were aware of this feature, and I always wanted to make a video about it since it had huge potential for organizing data sets in objects and viewing them all at once. I used it for weekly/monthly planning, OKRs, meeting notes, diaries, and many more. So, @Steffen and @Michael_v_H , since you are probably the only people understanding the issue I'm talking about, can you please give me feedback on whether this feature can be reintroduced, if it is gone for good or if Im missing something? My whole planning doesn't work anymore. I only see a cover image in Wall View ....

Ok ... I see what happened ... The Customise Card View is a very nice and welcome feature.... would it be Possible instead of having a generic Content Preview option to give a Choice which Block I want to view in Card View? And then you have the First Block in Gallery and all the Selected Blocks in Wall View!

It seems, that if you have a cover image, the content preview always shows it. If you don't, it shows text from the first text block, I think - maybe it starts from the beginning of the content and shows first thing it finds. So, if you have both this and cover image enabled, you get two times cover image...😂

Exactly... so it would make more sense to be able to choose each Property by itself. Including all Available Blocks rather than having an Arbitrary "Content" Properties which seems to be combining two Properties (1. object = Image - 2. Blocks = Multiple Paragraphs of Text) particularly if cover image is available as a property to Customise the Card view ... or am I missing something here?

"Content preview" is a useful combination of Cover image (if present) and blocks content as fallback. That way the available space can always be used to display a nice preview, especially in Gallery where the aspect ratio is fix.

I found some weird behaviour in the "jump to position" functionality (see video). If you click in the backlink on "Jump to position" it produces some weird behaviour: onClick it opens the object and doesn't do anything: on second click it closes and jumps to the position (reference on this page). It seems the action is only executed on the second click or something like that. (edited)

Or is it jump to position 'inside the backlink object' and then on the current page where it it's referenced 🤔 Maybe i'm a bit confused by the label and the action that is happening 🙂 (edited)

I'm always wondering why I don't see all of my objects on a list... until I realize that I can only see 20 in a list, and then I need to scroll to the other pages to see more. Is there a way for the pagination numbers to sit right beneath the table/list itself, instead of at the bottom of the screen -- on a large screen, the pagination options are not very conspicious because it's all the way at the bottom. Also, is it possible one day to see all these objects in one page instead of limiting them to just 20 a page?

For example hover over the left of the window slide-opens the left panel, pointer leaves the zone > menu hides. Yes it's like Notion... I know... but it's just SO practical 🙂 (there may be also downsides? dunno) Or other solutions? (edited)

I prefer the physical button (or shortcut) haha, I don't know why, but if its on hover (like in notion and in arc) it always shows the sidebar at moments I don't want it to .. 😂 for example if i'm working with two applications side by side

ok, that's a disadvantage... maybe the behavior could be toggled: either "show/hide" (current behavior) or "hover over to show"

Another possibility (1st step?) could be to have the toggle button stay in the same place whether the side bar is open or closed. Currently when you open the side bar, the menu button moves to the right, which makes it a bit longer/irritating to quickly open/close the menu bar

It's a minor detail, but I thought Capacities was telling me that it wasn't working because I didn't have an "organisation account". So I spent 20 minutes in Open Ai trying to understand the problem. So is this the expected behavior then? I would imagine that it be useful to have icons for both the property and the object, but with the view being smart enough to know to only use one or the other. In this case, I would expect the property icon to win.

Is there a reason why objects in any view (list, gallery, wall, etc) have a limited number of objects before you have to move to another page instead of putting them all on one page and then scrolling? Can be a problem when trying to get a Birds Eye view, or look at objects 16 and 17 together without having to flip back and forth between pages, or when in table view where it’s not always helpful to have the table cut off and move to another page. Or is there a possibility to have the option to scroll through??

it would be great if the selectable tags offered for filtering a view / object DB are only those that are actually contained in the set 🙂 this is a 'technical finesse' that would a) give huge pay-out in usability & sense-making; and b) simply makes sense, as it doesn´t make sense to filter any set for tags that are not part of it 🙂
... also gives me a chance to give a shout-out and saying 'thx' to @Michael_v_H & @Steffen for the new 'collection selection' in the filter view!! 🙏 – one of those little intelligent UI-things 🤏 that make CAP great! 🐲 🚀

When trying to edit tags in table view, it's difficult to distinguish the pop up box with tags for the selected object and suggested tags, from the tags for the other objects that appear before and after. A thicker outline for the box, a different background colour, or some other way to make it stand out would help. It's especially difficult because the size of the box changes as you type and more or less suggested tags are displayed.

(custom) spacing between headings / outline items / blocks?! hey – I wonder where to put this – either here in forums, but also in terms of feature requests... (... so, I´d be thankful for feedback / guidance on this by @Steffen or @Michael_v_H 🙏 ) I find myself regularly falling back on inserting empty lines between headlines and / or blocks, just because for some views (particularly in outline mode) the blocks containing multiple lines & sublines just feel too dense for me. – I think there could / should be a more elegant solution for this. 🤔 🙃 ... not sure this should be deferred to bigger issue-contexts like templates. it might also be solved by something like global customization for different heading levels, or other ways to control line-height / paragraph spacing... maybe even on a per-item level...? in any way: a more breathing / readable set-up and spacing would be extremely welcome, esp. for contexts of outlining, working with multiple parallel blocks etc. 🌱

Having those kind of settings would for sure be very nice for the overall readbility, comfort and appealing visual experience in the app. Why not consider a set of display settings which would encompass paragraph spacing settings, but also font defaults (assuming font choices will come to Capacities), bullet display, toggle display, and other formatting defaults?

Hi! Would love to be able to vertically extend a Code block, so that it's taking up more of the page. I use code blocks (two side by side) mostly for plain text to copy in chords from Ultimate Guitar or other sites, and it would be great to extend the blocks so that they would take up the whole screen. Also - when I paste in text from those sites, the code blocks add an extra space between each line (which Notion's code blocks, for example, don't do). Is it possible to fix both? Thanks!

Shift-Click adds a block above. The additional space for another plus icon creates several UI challenges/drawbacks.

just noticed: embedded images in wide view here have a ghost-like margin on right-hand side. per se this is not critical. but using this in a set-up (composition) with different block elements thriws the whole balance 'off' and gives an unruly / tilted-weight impression... – this becomes even more 'accentuated' when using textblocks below (e.g. for captions). ... maybe this can be corrected? 🖼🫶 (edited)

I haven't tested this with the web-ui, just OSX. Make a link Cmd+K Enters you on the URL Entry line. If you hit Tab, it closes the window. If you hit shift-Tab, it drives you back correctly If you enter a URL, hit Shift-Tab to drive back to enter the Title, then hit return, no link is generated but the Title is used.

Style overriding-- if I take a bullet point and try and paste it into a todo list, it converts the todo to a bullet. You have to copy just the text. I attempted a classical paste-as-style key combo and it does nothing. Obv. a clean copy would be nice, but if you copy a whole bunch of items and don't want to carry the style, it'd probably be a good idea to support paste-as-text or something.

I agree with the idea that there are customization options for the style of the Capacities interface. The white theme is good, the black/gray theme is good, but they are tiring. With a little CSS I gave a personal touch to my Capacities.

Hello @AMB1305 , since I don't know how much you know about the subject, I offer you a short explanation, if you want more details just ask. I use an extension (Website Customizer) to modify the Capacities CSS code in Google Chrome. In the case of the image that I have placed in the background in the left side panel, I have found that the CSS code that you have to modify is: .sm:max-h-full { background-image: url("http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Arhprc6hAKH-KNOjyegao8EvU7vx-Hz4"} I have the image saved in Google Drive and I only have to change the URL when I want a different image. You simply add that code to the extension and the Capacities page is modified. For any change you want to make, you look for the CSS code you want to modify (Developer Tools), you test if it has an effect, until you find the right code, and finally when you have the right code you modify it to your liking.

When pasting a link I wish all the view options were given not just the two. I also really wish the default format was the link block and not the inline. The current inline default is the least aesthetic by far, it is a blue and messy looking link. I think the link block looks best as it is minimal but still has a icon for some kind of visual reference/memory aid.
9:13 PM
I wish deleting blocks wasn't such a multistep process and was really fast. Maybe in the settings, I would like to have the option to have 'delete everywhere as default' on so that I am never asked this kind of question when I delete.

Creating a filter with multiple criteria is a really frustrating experience right now if you need to open up an content type selector, as it closes the filter editor each time. It'd be better if it could return to the filter editor dialog after selecting so I could continue setting things the other criteria instead of having to open it again each time. Would also be better if the content type selector could multiselect items given the relationship is 'includes' which infers a set, but guess that's more of a feature request.

Excited about new task integration. UX feedback, the layout took me a good 30 seconds to even find the button to send the ToDo into my Google Tasks. In full screen wide object layout, I am focused on the left side where I'm typing but all the way across the screen is the very small airplane button. I actually had to pull up the announcement page again to realize I was even looking for a paper airplane button 😄 (edited)
9:20 AM
any chance we could stack the airplane button on the left where the block handle and the + button are?
Avatar
Another feedback point, I'm wondering if people think these two states for tasks in Capacities are visually too similar for at-a-glance ability to see which are complete and which are sent to external task tool
9:35 AM
maybe sent is green with an airplane and complete is blue with check mark?

I'm wondering too if a task can ever fail to send, in which case red and green can denote success state that the task was successfully received by the target external tool

Any chance the functionality generating the "recently used" set of emojis could be extended to provide the same behavior for Icons? I like the icons a lot and use them to visually categorize small text entries throughout the day, and I'm almost always using the same 2-3. As it is right now, I have to search every time. This doesn't take long once, but adds up after multiple times every day. (edited)

I just connected Capacities to Things and it's a dream come true. I just have some QOL ideas that I've run into:
  • Whenever I am in planning mode, I write a bunch of tasks one after the other. I would like to bulk send them to Things (or any outliner app) but I could not figure out if this is possible.
  • When in writing mode in Capacities, I write tasks in between my text. Whenever I hit the shortcut to send that task to Thinks the Mac focuses on Things (right after hitting the shortcut) so I cannot continue writing fluently and I have to manually switch back to the Capacities app. For my workflow it would work better to send the task to Things on the background allowing me to continue writing on Capacities.
Love the integration so far, it is definitely on the right path.

Consider making it possible to navigate directly (via URL) to the "Today" view. I pin a tab for Capacities in my browser (and most browsers follow the page/URL at the time of pinning). If I pin "Today" while today is Nov 20 2023, returning to Capacities via that browser pin on Thursday Nov 24, 2023 will result in the calendar entry from Nov 20 2023 being displayed. (edited)

Initially attracted by Capacities' clean UI, I've noticed it has become distracting over time. The excessive use of borders, especially in wall and gallery views, along with numerous buttons and texts, is overwhelming. Elements like the object type and collection option, seldom used, are consistently visible and prominent, hindering focus on the main content. So much going on even on an empty page. The UI is so busy. I wish we had a option to hide the things like in-text tags many others when I don't need it. Hoping for a more minimalist and simple UI improvement in the future. Thank you. small thing: when in object type (main view / wondow) the way to edit its name is quite long – ... and a little bit confusing. – one is presented with a) two instances of the title (both rather small; one in pill, one in header); then there seems no way editing them directly, but the way goes via the three dots (…) at the other side of the – sometimes bigger – screen... ... no big thing, but IMO micro-friction that can be avoided, ... and some micro-confusion... 😜

#1 when I switch views btw list view and gallery view the sorting order change in case of special syntax; e.g. if I insert a '!' it sometimes gets priority over the following letters (gallery view); and then it gets ignored in terms of sorting (list view); also plurals ('s) are one time ahead of singulars, then again not... etc. 👉 should be unified 🤓 (edited)

Small thing but annoying. There’s currently no easy way for me to move a block of text to another daily note / another page. Simple example: pushing a task „meet XYZ for lunch“ from todays note to next week after he/she called and we rescheduled. Noteplan does a great job here in terms of UX for this action.

When viewing the content related to a Tag in "Gallery" view I love that it groups content by type. Would love it even more if it allowed multiple columns in the view to prevent a super long scroll of content. Quick filters at the top for the content Types present could be a nice fix as well. I know you can create a filter but a quick to click filter button for each present content type would be more user friendly.

just to point ppl to one thing + offer to vote on this: I keep finding myself irritated about the availability of three widths for block (normal, mid-width, wide) for grouped blocks – but not being able to assign a 'mid'-width globally to pages. add to that, that I also find normal (often) too thin, esp. for more graphical or layouted content (multi columns!), and the wide-mode to cramped (as it bumps into the functional panels quite head-on w/o any chrome / padding. so, I asked some time for making CAP coherent here, and allow all three modes equally in both instances, i.e. having normal – mid – wide for both: grouped blocks as well as page width. – as it is still under review, I thought I take temperature here, and give people interested in that an opportunity to vote; or even extend the discussion on width and the way Capacities uses global presets here... so, find it here 👉 : https://capacities.io/feedback/p/mid-width-layout (edited)

Also a small yet weird UX thing in the mobile app. The buttons for indenting and outdenting are ordered unnaturally, I would expect the right one to indent and the left one to outdent as this is the direction the text moves. However, for some reason they are reversed.

1. I would love it if we can easily swipe between days when on a daily note, rather than having to click on this would make it easier in my eyes to quickly gage what’s ahead/still open from the past. 2. I’d love for a Force Touch on a block to lift the block (and indented subblocks) so I can easily drag and drop the block whenever I want (similar to the move behavior on desktop), Notion is a great implementation of this behavior

small thing, but as to reducing friction: I find that the renaming of object types is a little off as compared to collections. IMO one would expect roughly the same UI-paths here. but as is, renaming object types is quite cumbersome and requires a total different set of clicks, while renaming collections is a breeze (just clicking title – as expected 🙂 ). ... also simply the difference in looks btw titles of collections and object types always gives me little irritation / confusion... 🙃

I wouldn't expect it to be improved. since renaming object types is not a day-to-day operation. We may do it many times when we do our first setup or re-setup, which shouldn't happend often

still noting it down / asking 🙂 – though I never expect anything 🙂 especially not in the 'idea section' 😀 for one, I do it quite often. but, also, I think consistency is key / king; especially as function space expands so steadily...

I added a request to Canny for more visual contrast between elements, particularly with respect to type size. If you'd prefer that I post my thoughts here, I will. I mostly wanted to let the rest of my UI nerd tribe know that it's there for the upvote. https://capacities.io/feedback/p/ui-add-more-contrast-to-the-hierarchy-of-elements-on-the-page

not sure if this has been mentioned before, but would love some spacing between "Add property" and the first block. Would make the text seem less constricted and look better imo! thanks 🙂

I am using Capacities usually in my (Vivaldi) browser. Under vivaldi:flags I have enabled a special feature: "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents" with the option "Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements". There are only very rare cases where this personal preference causes display problems on web pages. Unfortunately, the graph view of Capacities is one of them. On the screenshot you can see what I mean. Maybe this can be resolved somehow. Only the graph view is affected by that.

Capacities has a dedicated dark mode. We recommend to use that one and deactivate that plugin on app.capacities.io

Thanx for your response! I am using the dark mode of Capacities. For my mentioned problem, however, it doesn't matter if I use the dark or light mode of Capacities since it appears in both of them. But I have the desktop app installed as well. So if I want to use the graph view I can recourse to that app.

I'm wondering if we should add an option to the File menu to change space. I often hide the left sidebar relying more on search to open objects of different types instead of navigating via the bar. But in times I need to change space, I have to open the sidebar to reach the dropdown for which space I'm in. What are others' thoughts? My proposal: File > Space > [List of Spaces alphabetically]

Hi @Json Blob, for this scenario we have the command palette which you can access from anywhere via keyboard. It already contains the options to change spaces:

Hi! The resize column bar and the "add something at the bottom" bar (I had no idea how to call them) could receive some design love, they're kind of basic, large and bold and sometimes particularly annoying when hovering the section.
Avatar
when I said "particularly annoying when hovering the section" I mean they should be subtle, not removed, or maybe there should be a workaround so if you are not adding anything new you are not constantly being shown those bars

2 observations from practice: 1. reverting format as code *seems impossible, … or at least opaque / difficult… 2. generally, my impression / experience is that the formatting options (panels) are still *spread a little chaotically (UI speak: unpredictably; unintuitive) overall. – I am aware there is some testing, as things seem to move every time I search for things again… so, I would encourage the team to give this some hard thinking, and try to find better, more accessible and transparent solution! 🫶 – generally formatting is a kin of search, file structure, moving elements / paragraphs... i.e. these are* first generation concepts*, whose relevance can be underestimated easily, as they are so custom / universal / general-purpose… 😉 🥷

@lerone - Agree on point 2 in terms of opportunity to streamline access to formatting options (panels & menus) to reduce friction. (edited)

Nit-picky but I find this "Change type of selected objects" to be very similar to a Refresh button which doesn't clearly communicate by icon what this button does. I ultimately would never die on this hill to change the icon but just caught my attention that a circular arrow is universally "refresh" and not "change type" connotation (edited)

I don't agree tbh, that icon has two arrows, It's pretty clear that is implying a swap or change

reload icons are always one arrow in full circle

similar but not the same

That's a fair detail I did not consider and you're not wrong that many times they are a single arrow in a full circle. Well, food for thought for the devs. If it stays I'm okay with it too

also it would be better if when ( is pressed that capacities create another ) completing it at the end of the current typing thing. so that u can just type what u want in them and press right arrow to go outside them. just like obsidian. and just like the [ ] linking brackets .

I took a fresh look at the issue of too small & too cramped page widths, and possible solutions (– because I really crave for one in my given monitor set-up). I came to a new conclusion, kind of doing away with my initial request to make the 'mid'-width block setting also available for page widths (also in view of consistency). my main insight, working on a 27''-monitor (and knowing some people really have / cherish even wider ones), is a proposal to allow for custom page widths (& / vh / …), instead of preset fixed width options! you can read about details here, add comments & ideas reflecting your experience / needs / ideas, … and, of course, support this with a vote: 👉 https://capacities.io/feedback/p/allowing-custom-page-widths-vh-instead-of-preset-fixed-width-options it looks like a very 'small' issue, but to me &T given very variable screen set-ups for everyone this really touches on basic 'ergonomy' and 'base feel' of using Capacities – especially making full use of the columns and all their functional / aesthetic potential! – being in a comfort zone as to basic appearance / impression, and to some extent readability of the main object content in a given (overall variable) device setting seems to be important to 'fell at home' at ones 'studio' 🦦

if I can hop on to these very fine grain details (@Json Blob brought up), which nevertheless can irritate some individuals: for me, I find myself regularly baffled by the 'open as page' icon in the modal popup view. while I acknowledge it stands generally for 'enlarge', it by now is – in my mind – universally tied to 'fullscreen view'… actually a view, I regularly use as standard view for Capacities being one of my anchor apps. meaning, I see the thinking / motivation. but find it not the best choice (a.k.a. an irritant) nevertheless. maybe there can be some better icon, more into the 'open' semantics…?! 🤔 🌻

…, admittedly, I keep re-bumping into this problem of 'legibility' with the search results😔 it´s as much true for titles which get kind of lost in Wall & Gallery view (see prior posts) ; but the same is actually true for, e.g., object type 'pills'… … you can make a simple test here, to see things are unbalanced and the weight, which should assist / guid the fleeting / browsing glance (of going over such a result list in evaluative viewing mode): 👉 compare the size of tags displayed in such a result list vis-a-vis the main info of such a structured list, that is the titles of the entries found, or the category sorting of the list (like 'object types'). – the tags (being kind of 'normal' content here in some way, are twice as big as objet titles retrieved, and kind of 2,5x size of the titles for categorical sorting… 🤔 🙃 🤔 it´s a little shame, because Capacities otherwise shines so much in design clarity and good minimalism. this is kind of an exception, breaking the rule, IMHO

there are times I wish I could have such a simple 'locate / show in database / hierarchy' function. – there are several ways to get to an object / document, w/o really understanding / 'feeling' where it´s originally located; or being able see it in that context w/o too many clicks and loosing the thread… 🌪

When I use "shift+click" , open in right panel. Then I use "ctlr+W" to close the right panel tab, but the action will close left. ==== So the logic of "shift + click" & "ctrl+W" , the order is not useful for closing tab. Requests, ideas, bugs https://capacities.io/feedback/p/cmdw-shortcut-to-close-tab-close-app Hope Capacities Team can consider for it. I think shift click to open embed-page , view page, and close it , the action is easy and quickly. If the action is not useful , I must move mouse to right-top then click "x" button everytime... Its so boring. Thanks.

Small bit of polish, but the amount of space between the title and text of this embedded object seems excessive. The hidden fields likely don't demand a full line, and the spacing above it also seems too much.

Thinking about the closed state of "Hidden"—I think the toggle could potentially be put in the meatball menu, rather than inline with the content. Nice to have the option, but it's just not frequently enough used (for me) to use permanent screen real estate. (edited)

Small unexpected behaviour: When I have two consecutive blocks with some text, and I press backspace at the start of the second block, they merge as expected. However, when I press the delete key when at the end of the first block, the merge doesn't happen.

I've noticed that too and horizontal separators act even stranger imo. I have a feedback thing open for that someplace I'm pretty sure 😄

This is a Feedback post as a user working with Capcities for a couple of weeks now and I am loving the app so far. I quickly became a believer because...well because I believe that Capacities gives me the right balance between structure and freeform and none of the other apps (I tried them...) is able to do that. But at the same time there isn't a single day I am not hitting some kind of bug of weird behaviour...for example:
  • I have a tag in my system which I actively use in queries which is just not showing up under the tags objects... (I just now added the tag to a collection and NOW it is shown system...)
  • PDFs are randomly upside down
  • I can not select text in PDFs when scrolling to the second page...I need to zoom in and out once...afterwards selecting text is working
  • Randomly the query editors "cancel" and "update" buttones are moved outside the window frame where they are invisible. Enter or escape is also not working so I need to restart the app.
  • Cut & Paste of blocks is not existent And this is just what I encountered TODAY. Please do not get me wrong: I love the app and I will continue to use it and I am looking forward to a lot of planned features but at the same time I feel the current features are in desperate need of stabilisation...again: this post comes not from disappointment but from excitement about the future of Capacities.

it would be nice if the cmd + enter could toggle a section 'from within´, i.e. with the cursor being in the toggled content. not only would this be handy – but afaik the cmd-enter doesn´t interfere w/ anything else, also. … one could even imagine a functioning like w/ cmd + a, i.e. several repetitive 'cmd + enters' sequentiall closing higher + higher toggles...
