Get your hands dirty with Dior's $8,700 gardening kit

Crafted in the shape of Dior’s iconic Saddle bag.

For those with a green thumb and plenty of green to spend comes Dior’s latest outdoor concoction, an $8,700 gardening kit. The super-luxe set comes with the tools you’d need to cultivate the couture garden of your dreams (that you otherwise wouldn’t find at your local Home Depot).

Digging for luxury — The kit is designed as a simplistic foldable stool decked in a bull calfskin leather draping. There’s no back support, so it’s already a loss on practicality and a danger on one’s back after even 10 minutes of bending over, but its shape pays homage to the curves and pockets of Dior’s Saddle bag, one of the luxury house’s most recognizable purses. A flap pocket at its side allows for discrete safeguarding and storage, while three loops can hold the extravagant tools also included in the kit. To finish off the design, the stool is also fitted with silver D-ring hardware and Dior branding on the legs.

Although Dior’s founder was famously known as a lover of his gardens, it seems unlikely that any owner of the gardening kit would be okay with getting their fingernails riddled with dirt. So to make the job easier, the set also comes with a matching hand rake and spade. Their handles feature the same grained leather material to match the stool’s seat, and engraved Dior branding takes its place at the end of the handles.

Does money really grow on trees? — While luxury outdoor gear may be pretty and offer an aura of exclusivity, that’s truly its only so-called advantage. The items are hardly “better” than their more affordable counterparts, yet range into the thousands of dollars for pieces like treadmills, jump ropes, and hiking sandals. The point of quality outdoor gear is to perform well and be practical, but these high-end pieces likely appeal more to those who want to upkeep a certain lifestyle than actually get their hands dirty.

Dior’s gardening couture kit can be purchased in-store, but you’ll have to fill out an online order form first. If the full kit’s $8,700 price tag is out of reach but you still insist on repping Dior in the garden, the label also has a slightly more affordable tool option and separate matching gloves and apron. Or, you can head to your local hardware store and pick up a $20 set. Because let’s face it, your plants won’t know the difference.
