Settings
You can access Editorial’s settings from the editor, using the gear button. On the iPhone, you’ll find the settings button in the file browser. The settings are divided into multiple categories, described below.
Dropbox
If you haven’t already linked Editorial to your Dropbox account, you can do this from here. When your account is linked, additional settings will appear. You can change the folder Editorial syncs with, or reset the sync, if you’re experiencing problems.
General
- Dark Theme – Turn this on if you prefer to work in a dark environment.
- Panel Gestures – This controls how the swipe gestures for switching between different panels work. By default, you can use them everywhere, but if you find yourself accidentally switching between panels, you might want them to work only from the left and right screen edges.
- Default File Format – When creating a new file, Editorial shows a format selection dialog (Markdown, Plain Text, TaskPaper). You can use this setting to skip the dialog and use a default format (you can use other formats by using a different extension when renaming a file).
- Restore Default Workflows & Snippets... – Use this if you accidentally deleted or modified the workflows that came with the app. Workflows that you added yourself will not be affected by this.
Editor
General
- Line Spacing – Controls the text editor’s line spacing for both Markdown and plain text documents.
- Text Width – Controls the editor’s margins – wide text = small margins.
- Live Word Count – When this is turned on, you can see the word count while you’re writing (in the top-right corner).
- Automatic Character Pairs – By default, Editorial automatically inserts closing parentheses etc. You can turn this off here.
- Check Spelling / Auto-Correction / Auto-Capitalization – These settings affect the main text editor’s behavior.
Markdown
- Syntax Highlighting – Turn this off to completely disable all syntax highlighting. This causes Markdown documents to behave like plain text documents.
- Text Font – Font settings for regular paragraph text.
- Heading Font – Font settings for headings – All headings use the same font, but you can specify different sizes for different heading levels. You can also turn off the separator line after level-1 headings here.
- Code Font – Controls the monospace font that is used for code blocks and inline code. The font size setting only affects code blocks, the size for inline code is automatically based on the regular text font size.
- Formatting Character Opacity – When syntax highlighting for Markdown is enabled, Editorial dims formatting characters like *. This setting controls the amount by which these characters are dimmed. A setting of 1.0 makes them appear like regular text.
- File Extensions – This setting controls which file extensions are treated as Markdown (with syntax highlighting and HTML preview) by the editor.
- Default Extension – This is the file extension that is used for new Markdown documents.
- HTML Preview – These are various settings that control the behavior of the Markdown preview renderer. You can also choose to use full Multi-Markdown.
- Use Custom Template – Here you can edit the HTML template that is used for the Markdown preview, e.g. to style it similar to your website.
Plain Text
- Text Font – The font that is used in plain text documents.
- Additional Extensions – Custom file extensions that should be opened as plain text.
- Default Extension – The file extension that is used for new documents.
TaskPaper
- Color Labels – You can use these settings to map tags to color labels, for example to make important tasks stand out.
- Show Checkboxes (iPad only) – Controls the visibility of task checkboxes in the editor.
- Show Drag Handles – When turned on, the right margin of TaskPaper documents can be used to reorder tasks and notes.
Workflows
- Restore Default Workflows & Snippets... – This restores the workflows and snippets that came bundled with Editorial, in case you accidentally deleted them.
- Shared Workflows – Shows a list of workflows you’ve shared. You can also delete shared workflows from here.
Snippets & Abbreviations
- Ignore Case – When this is enabled, an abbreviation like “WBR” is also expanded if you type “wbr” (or “Wbr”, “wBR”, etc.).
- Sound Effects – Controls whether a sound effect is played when a snippet is inserted.
- Suggest Completions – This setting controls when/if suggestions for snippets appear above the keyboard while typing (before you’ve completely typed an abbreviation). By default, snippets are suggested after the second letter in an abbreviation is typed.
- Enable TextExpander Snippets – If you have the TextExpander app installed, you can use its (shared) snippets, in addition to Editorial’s own snippet system.
- Suggest TE Snippets While Typing – This setting will only be shown if TextExpander snippets are enabled. Turn this off if you want to expand TextExpander snippets, but don’t want them to appear in the auto-completion list.
