Bear With Us: An interview with Gabriel Weinberg of DuckDuckGo

This post is part of our interview series to answer the question: who uses Bear? What do they want out of a notes app? How does Bear fit into their work or play? Do they prefer Star Trek or Star Wars?

We’re on a mission to ask these and other burning questions from interesting folks. Then we share their answers with you.

For this installment of Bear With Us we spoke with Gabriel Weinberg, founder and CEO of DuckDuckGo, the search engine focused on privacy. Gabriel is a newer Bear user but has already found some clever uses for it.

Check out Gabriel’s interview below. Then catch us on Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook to let us know who else we should interview for future posts!

Who are you and what do you do for a living?

I’m Gabriel Weinberg, CEO & Founder of DuckDuckGo, the Internet privacy company and private search engine.

How about for fun?

Fun… I have two youngish kids (10 & 8) and they take up most of my free time! For the last two years, though, I also wrote a book with my wife about mental models and better decision making. It’s called Super Thinking and we published it last month.

How long have you been using Bear?

I’m a relatively recent convert from the past few months.

How many notes and tags do you have?

Pretty clean right now — maybe 20 notes and I haven’t gotten into tags yet.

Can you share a little about your organization process?

I have notes for long-running lists of topics, for example ‘People to meet’ (in different cities I may visit) or links for topics I’m researching.

How does Bear fit into your workflow? Do you use it in certain places, or for specific tasks?

In two primary ways. First, I use it as a place to keep track of these various lists as random things come up. Second, I use it to draft posts and comments when mobile.

What is one of your favorite features in Bear?

I primarily switched to it for the better typography and look & feel, though I immediately appreciated the instant Markdown features.

What is a feature you’d like to see added to Bear?

I don’t have any requests yet, though I’m sure I will soon enough!

Star Trek or Star Wars? Both? Or something else?

Spaceballs.

Would you rather take a cruise or go hiking?

This one is easy: hiking. I get super sea sick and I’m an Eagle Scout :).

Coffee or tea?

Coke.

Until next time
